Adoption: A Legal Guide for Birth and Adoptive Parents
Published in Paperback by Career Press (February, 1994)
Authors: Kelly Allen Sifferman and Richard L. Strohn
Average review score:

Comprehensive but easily understood
I turned to this legal guide first. Later when I sat in my attorney's office with the expensive meter running, I already knew the answers to the basic questions. This guide helped me focus on the important aspects of adoption, gave me sample forms, a reading list, and possible scenarios that I had overlooked. Comprehensive enough for the layman without being inundated with legalese. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone starting the adoption process.

Adventures in Kinship with All Life

Adventures in mind expansion
If you've ever wondered what God put animals on this Earth for, reading this book will give you an immensely practical and satisfying answer. Animals are our teachers, says Boone. Great teachers, too. Intelligent, aware teachers. What have I to learn? you may ask. Reading this book will give you example after example in the form of fascinating true stories written with clarity and humor. A must read for the spiritually open or for anyone who loves animals.

Ahab's Trade: The Saga of South Sea Whaling
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (February, 2000)
Author: Granville Allen Mawer
Average review score:

Great whaling history.
This is a really good piece of work. I'm a maritime history buff and I enjoyed it a lot. If you're at all interested in the early history of the New England states or especially interested in Nantucket and the way people there made their fortunes, I'd give this book a try. It's a good history that reads like a good novel in places. Highly recommended.

All American Alien Boy: The United States As Science Fiction, Science Fiction As a Journey; A Collection
Published in Paperback by Ace Books (October, 1997)
Author: Allen Steele
Average review score:

Down to Earth stories set in a science fictional backdrop
Allen Steele, well known for his novels The Jericho Iteration and The Tranquility Alternative shows us where his true talents lie...the short story/novella. This collection is full of insightful short fiction which uses science fiction not as a driving force behind the story, but rather as a backdrop. From the story "Lost in the Shopping Mall" which uses VR as the setting for a story about teen angst, to "Hunting Wabbit" in which the fact that the Earth is about to be destroyed is completely ancillary to a story about critics, authors, and the the relationships they share.
Each story is accompanied by the authors musings on his motivations behind the story and it is precisely this that makes this an excellent read even if you've read all the stories contained herein before.

All the Sincerity in Hollywood: Selections from the Writings of Fred Allen
Published in Hardcover by Fulcrum Pub (01 September, 2001)
Authors: Fred Allen and Stuart Hample
Average review score:

The Joy of Rediscovering America's Forgotten Humorist
Fred Allen, the only satirical comedian of radio's golden age, is revealed as a true American humorist, in the pantheon with Thurber, lardner and Twain. This book contains a wide selection of his writings, clear-eyed, wsitty, biting, compassionate. Excerpts from his two meoirs have the quality of what Frank McCourt wrote 50 years later in Angela's Ashes. Allen, we see, was the father of contemporary comedy and his influence prevails today. Letterman, Carson, Bob & Ray, Keillor, Your Show of Shows, Sat. Night Live - all are arguably legatees of his original sparkling style. This is perhaps the most deeply funny book I've read in years and will bring joy to readers of all ages. And it's a perfect gift for young people to give to parents and in-laws who, if they remember, say, tyhe Dionne Quintupl;ets, will be thrilled to get to oknow the great wit Fred Allen again. If there were 10 stars, I would award them to this book.

Allan W. Eckert's Tecumseh!
Published in Paperback by Eclipse Books (October, 1992)
Authors: Allan W. Eckert, Timothy Truman, and Allen Eckert
Average review score:

Graphic Adaptation of the Allan Eckert Drama
This is Timothy Truman's beautiful graphic novel adaptation of Alan Eckert's outdoor drama Tecumseh! which is performed every summer in Chillicothe, OH. It is based on the life of the Shawnee leader Tecumseh and tells the story of the rise and fall of this great Indian hero and his ambitious plan to unite the eastern woodland tribes in a final war to remove the threat of white expansion into the trans-Alleghany west. Truman has done a number of other wonderful graphic novels relating to this period and this one is just as great. If you can get ahold of a copy, buy it.
